Information We Collect
The information we collect through the Service and how we use it Among other services, we provide analytics that enable advertisers, website and application developers, and third-party advertising platforms (collectively, "Customers") to better understand the effectiveness of their content, including online advertising. For example, we can help our Clients understand whether their articles or ads tend to be viewed by users and whether their articles or ads appear in a visible manner. In providing these services, we may work with business partners who collect and provide us with information collected from users' browsers or devices. The information we or they may collect through our Services (referred to in this Privacy and Cookies Policy as "Service Information") includes the following:
Log Information: Our servers may automatically log information sent by each browser when a user visits a website where our Services are deployed. These server logs include information such as Internet Protocol ("IP") address (a unique number automatically assigned to your computer), date and time, browser type, and the user's interaction with the customer's content and advertisements.
Mobile Data: Through the mobile applications in which the Services are deployed, we (or our customers and other application providers with whom we work) may also collect information about users' interactions with those applications (including your IP address and timestamp information) as well as information about users' Mobile devices (including device type, phone name, operating system information, mobile identifiers (such as Apple IDFA and Android Ad ID), application-specific identifiers, and a list of applications with which they interact). We, our business partners, or customers may collect information about your browser, device, and how you interact with web and mobile content by using the cookie ID associated with your browser. We or our business partners may deploy and read these unique IDs to passively "collect" them when you visit sites where our services are deployed or (if our business partners are involved) where they interact with users' browsers. For more detailed information about these technologies, please see the sections below titled "Cookies," "Pixel Tags," and "SDK" and how we use them. We may combine information from any of the above services with each other and with information or inferences about a user's interaction with advertisements, content, web pages, or applications offered or displayed by our customers ("View Data").

"Cookies," "Pixel Tags," and "SDKs," and How We Use Cookies and Pixel Tags
Cookies are small data files containing strings, such as anonymous unique browser identifiers. Cookies are stored on your computer or other device and act as a (usually unique) tag that identifies your device. Our servers send cookies to your browser or device when you visit the Site, and customers and partners may do so on their websites or through their multi-site platforms.
Pixel tags (also commonly referred to as web beacons or transparent GIFs) are invisible 1 x 1 pixels that are placed on certain web pages. When you visit these pages, pixel tags generate general notifications about the visit and allow us to set or read cookies. Pixel tags are used in conjunction with cookies to track the activity of specific devices on the site. When you turn off cookies, pixel tags will only detect unique site visits.
We (or our partners with whom we work) may use cookies to "remember" you (for example, when you visit a website), to track user trends, and to collect information about how you use customer websites or interact with advertisements. We use cookies to provide you with relevant content and to replace irrelevant ads with ads that better match your interests.
We may use the following types of cookies:
Absolutely Necessary Cookies: These are cookies that are necessary for the operation of our website; for example, they include cookies that enable you to log in to secure areas of our website or to use electronic billing services.
Analytics/Performance Cookies: These enable us to identify and count the number of visitors and to understand how visitors move around our website or our clients' websites. This helps us and our clients to improve the way the site works, for example, by ensuring that users can easily find the content they want.
Functionality Cookies: This information can be used to identify you when you return to our website or a customer's website. This means that content can be personalized for you, and your preferences can be remembered (for example, your choice of language or region).
Location Cookies: These cookies record your visit to our website or to a customer's website, the pages you have visited, and the links you have visited. This information is used to make the site and the advertisements displayed on it more relevant to your interests. We may also share this information with third parties for this purpose.
Disabling Cookies: Most Web browsers are set to accept cookies. You may be able to set your browser to warn you before accepting certain cookies or rejecting certain cookies. However, if you disable the use of cookies in your Web browser, some features of the Web sites you visit may be difficult or impossible to use. For more information about cookies and how to change your browser settings, please visit www.aboutcookies.org.
Mobile Device Identifiers and SDKs: We also sometimes use or work with publishers or publisher-facing application developer platforms that use mobile SDKs to collect information, such as mobile identifiers (e.g., IDFA and Android ad IDs) and information about how mobile devices interact with our Services and those who use our Services. Mobile SDKs are actually mobile application versions of pixel tags or beacons. SDKs are computer code that application developers can add to their applications to enable them to display ads, collect data, and implement related services. For example, we may use this technology to analyze or evaluate certain advertisements through mobile applications and browsers based on information relevant to your mobile device. If you wish to opt out of ads tailored to your mobile device in this way, please follow the instructions in the section entitled "Your Choices and Your Opt-Out Options" below.
Customers or partners with whom we work may use the above technologies, sometimes in combination with each other or with other data such as IP addresses or hashed or de-identified data files, to coordinate user identities across platforms, browsers, or devices, to more effectively analyze online or mobile audience segments, or to target ads and analyze ad effectiveness.
Your Choices
We sometimes work with companies that capture anonymous or unidentified data and create targeting attributes based on a user's online browsing activity. You can opt out of these third-party services (and learn more about them) by visiting the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out page or the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page, or, if you are a European user, by visiting www.youronlinechoices.com.
Please note that opting out of this page will typically only opt out of these companies' "third party" ad targeting features; you will continue to see non-customized ads. Similarly, in order to provide or use our services, we (or our clients and partners with whom we work) may use other information collected from users online (such as IP addresses), aggregated with information collected from various websites and mobile applications, and various devices or browsers. The industries mentioned above provide opt-out pages that also enable you to opt-out of many of these services. The site provides other consumer choice tools, including browser extensions, Enterprise opt-out procedures) and information about the Control application that you can use to enable the information "opt-out" feature for mobile applications or websites.
To opt out of our data services, please follow these steps:
Download and install the extension (which, in addition to allowing you to block our data collection, will also provide multiple opt-out options).
Enabling the "Ghostery results panel" after installation.
When our service appears in the Ghostery panel, you can prevent our service from collecting data.
Please note that Ghostery may make updates or changes to its features and that they (not we) control these features.
We also sometimes work with companies that capture advertising identifiers from mobile devices. You can deactivate these identifiers for interest-based advertising purposes by accessing the settings on your phone.
Third Parties
As with most websites, third parties may collect user information directly from users of our websites through automated methods such as cookies or pixels. For example, our third-party video hosting provider may use Flash Cookies to collect and store information, such as your volume control preferences. Cookie management tools provided by your browser can help you manage certain types of cookies, but may not work with other types of cookies, such as Flash cookies. To learn how to manage privacy and storage settings for Flash Cookies, click here.
Our advertising network partners may use cookies and pixels to collect non-personally identifiable information about your activities on this and other websites in order to provide you with targeted advertising based on your interests. If you do not wish to have this information used to advertise to you in this manner, you may opt out by the methods described in the "Your Choices" section above (for most or all of these companies). Please note that this will not cause you to opt out of advertising. You will continue to receive uninterested, regular advertisements.
In addition, the Site may contain embedded third-party content or links to third-party websites and content. Our Service has no control over these sites and/or content, and the privacy policies of these third parties differ from ours. Your access to linked websites or third-party content is at your own risk. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these websites or content providers, and you should review their applicable privacy policies to determine how they handle any information collected from you.
Security Measures
We take steps to prevent unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, interference with, disclosure, or destruction of the data we collect and store. This may include, for example, an internal review of our data collection, storage, and processing practices and security measures. Our servers are protected by firewalls and physically located in secure data facilities to further enhance security. Of course, no security system is perfect. Although we have taken a number of measures to prevent unauthorized access to the data we collect and store, we cannot guarantee that such data will not be disclosed or accessed inadvertently or through the unauthorized actions of others
International Transfer
We may transfer the personal information we collect from you to us, to third party data processors, or to members of a group of companies in other countries for the purposes described above. The data we collect will be stored on servers in the United States or elsewhere. Please note that countries outside your country of residence may not provide the same level of data protection as your country of residence, although our collection, storage, and use of your personal data will continue to be governed by this Privacy and Cookies Policy.
Your Rights
If you are a resident of Australia or a member state of the European Union, you have the following rights:
The right to access or request us to provide us with a copy of the personal information you hold about you at any time, which may be subject to a fee prescribed by law for processing your request (but not for access). We will respond to your request within a reasonable period of time. We may refuse a request for access to personal information in cases where the relevant privacy laws provide for such access. If we refuse a request, we will provide you with written notice setting out the reasons for the refusal (unless it is unreasonable to provide them) and provide you with a statement of the mechanisms available for making a complaint.
The right to request that we update and correct, free of charge, any outdated or incorrect or inaccurate personal information that we hold about you. We will take reasonable steps to correct the information so that it is accurate, complete, and up to date. If we refuse to correct your personal information, we will provide you with written notice setting out the reasons for our refusal (unless it is unreasonable to provide these reasons) and provide you with a stated complaint about the mechanisms available to you.
The right to opt out of any marketing communications that we (or any third party to whom you have consented to the disclosure of your personal information) may send to you.
If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please write to us (by email or post) using the contact details in section 11 below.
